Most people have heard of antioxidants, even if they aren’t quite sure what they are. It’s easiest just to show you what they are.

Take an apple and cut it in half. Leave one half untouched, but cover the other half in antioxidant-rich lemon juice. Leave them out on a plate and watch as the unprotected portion quickly turns brown and the other half, covered in lemon juice, does not.

This browning process is an example of oxidation. A normal metabolic process that is occurring throughout your body, right now.

So why haven’t you shriveled up like an apple, you may ask? After all, too much oxidative stress can damage enzymes, cells, and even your DNA.

Like the lemon, you are protected by antioxidants, which are micronutrients in some of your foods, and in your body that counter the damage caused by oxidation. You even have antioxidants in your saliva. If those antioxidant levels aren’t high enough, free radicals can cause oxidative damage to the structures within your mouth.

As a dentist, I encounter the oxidative damage done to oral tissues, every day. Oxidative stress has been linked to periodontal disease, oral cancer, dental caries, and a variety of other ailments.

Patients that have suboptimal levels of antioxidants could be at a higher risk for the development of many oral conditions or diseases. Fortunately, our dental practice has a solution.

PerioSciences – The Next Generation of Oral Care

PerioSciences products

Our dental care team is a proud partner of PerioSciences. Together, we want to concentrate on the development focuses in the mouth’s natural defense system– salivary antioxidants. Traditional oral care has focused on killing bacteria with strong agents that create a dry, oxidative environment in the mouth as a byproduct.

The PerioSciences’ approach is to work in concert with your body, using plant-based antioxidants and polyphenols to fight bacteria and protect against disease. To that end, their research has led to the development of several new solutions in the oral hygiene market.

AO ProVantage Gel

AO Provantage Gel will improve the appearance of the soft tissues of the oral cavity, leaving your mouth feeling soothed and refreshed. Our team loves this product, as it works synergistically with naturally-occurring salivary antioxidants to keep your tongue, teeth, and gums healthy.

AO ProRinse

AO ProRinse is our favorite weapon to combat dry mouth, sensitive teeth/gums, and bad breath. Using a targeted combination of antioxidants, moisturizers, and other micronutrients, AO ProRinse will rebalance moisture levels and protect your mouth.

AO ProToothpaste

Many toothpastes use abrasive materials that can potentially damage your enamel, while relying on alcohol to fight bacteria, leaving you with a dry mouth. AO ProToothpaste cleans gently, using a targeted combination of natural ingredients that compliment your body’s natural defenses.

PerioSciences – Making Oral Care Great Again

The family of AO Pro products has given dentists a great solution to everyday problems we face. From unnecessary bubbles to chemical agents that make your mouth “feel” clean, many of the products for our oral hygiene are designed with marketing in mind, not for a high-standard of care.

One of the most frequent questions I get is, “Dr. Duffy, what products do you use?”

I prefer to use products made by health professionals for health professionals. As a provider of PerioSciences products, we are happy to answer your questions and help determine which AO Pro product is right for you.
