Flower Power: 2017 Flower Mound Football

After dealing a devastating 44-0 loss to W.T. White during week one, the Flower Mound Jaguars have been limping along. They’ve put up great effort, but couldn’t get the W.

Week One Recap

The season opener for high school football in Flower Mound showed some impressive power on both sides of the ball. On offense, the Jaguars scored on their first five possessions, with quarterback Jackson Averitt contributing 177 yards through the air! Way to go!

While offense was clearly getting it done, the defense kept the Longhorns to zero points and an offensive total of just 11 yards. Now that’s stifling defense!

Week Two Recap

That decisive victory in week one must have given the Jaguars just a bit too much confidence going into week two, where they fell to a pretty even contest against Fossil Ridge. A rough start meant that Flower Mound was playing catch-up for the entirety of the game.

Although Flower Mound put up pretty impressive numbers on offense, three interceptions thrown and two fumbles lost meant they ultimately gave up too many opportunities to the Panthers, who secured a 42-30 victory.

Week Three Recap

While week one was a blowout and week two was a series of unfortunate events, week three was a simple defeat by a better team. With Averitt out for the year due to injury and the Jaguars’ running game looking inconsistent, the Timber Creek Falcons played it steady and consistent, demonstrating why they now have a 4-0 record in one of the best districts in Texas. If they keep playing like they did against us, they very well may be state contenders.

The numbers really tell us everything we need to know. While the Falcons rushed for 197 yards during the game, the Jaguars were kept to -1, completely unable to penetrate the opposition’s defense. Meanwhile, when they needed to, the Falcons were able to move the ball through the air. They were averaging 12.8 yards per pass, with seven catches and 127 yards to Eric Ezukanma. Keller Timber Creek continued the game to hold Flower Mound down to a 22-7 loss.

What’s the Rest of the 2017 Season Look Like for Flower Mound?

This week, the Flower Mound Jaguars face Southlake Carroll, possibly the toughest opponent in the district. If they want a chance of beating Carroll, the Jaguars are going to have to find their legs. Carroll has demonstrated a much stronger offense thus far, but if there is a place to find victory it’s in “points allowed per game.”

Southlake Carroll has allowed an average of 34 points per game, with two of their three previous opponents racking up more than 300 yards each from rushing.

Flower Mound will also need a way to shut down TJ McDaniel, one of the leading rushers in the DFW area. He has run for seven touchdowns in just three games, averaging 6.6 yards per carry. They will also need a plan to disrupt new quarterback Will Bowers, who has thrown seven touchdown passes and is an aggressive rusher himself.

If Flower Mound can hold off Southlake Carroll, then they should be able to face any opponent in the district. Tough matches to keep an eye on in the future will be Marcus and Trinity, but with such a tough schedule, any game could become a clincher in the right circumstances.

It’s going to be another fun season of football, and we can’t wait to see how it plays out!

Mouthguards for Young Athletes

Your young athletes might not start thinking about their teeth until there’s a problem. Did you know that only 36 percent of athletes (ages five to 17) are wearing their mouthguards at games and practice? Athletes (especially football players) are 60 times more likely to suffer an injury to their teeth or jaws if they don’t wear a mouthguard.

For more information about custom mouthguards and how we may be able to help, read our blog post. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
