Why Should You Choose a Pediatric Dentist?

Dr. Duffy and patients in Flower Mound

Why should you choose a pediatric dentist in Flower Mound over a general dentist? Is there really a difference in care levels?

You bet there is!

The short answer is that your child will receive specialty care from a dentist specially trained to work with children from a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentistry is a specialized field of care that trains dentists in childhood development and dental treatment for birth through adolescence. Not all general dentists are pediatric dentists.

This isn’t just an emphasis chosen in dental school; it requires an additional 2-3 years of residency training with infants, children, and teens. This comprehensive training teaches a dentist about pediatric needs such as risk assessment, habit counseling (such as pacifiers and thumb sucking), diagnosis of oral conditions and disease, and how to catch little problems early so that they don’t become bigger problems later.

Pediatric dentists like Dr. Duffy and Dr. Aubel are trained to treat the developing teeth of children. They understand the unique problems that children face, and have a much stronger focus on teaching preventive care and dental hygiene.

Pediatric teams have experience and patience in working with children, too. We focus on creating a positive environment, helping little ones overcome any fear or feelings of unease. Our pediatric team is great at speaking their language and understanding their needs.

A general dentist will often use standard-size equipment when working with the small mouths of kids. An advantage to a pediatric dentist is that we use smaller equipment specifically designed for children!

For a great illustration, simply compare the atmosphere of a general practice (first photo) and a pediatric practice (second photo). While the former will have a very clinical feel, which is intimidating to children, a pediatric practice tries to create a kid-friendly environment. Just compare a photo of our practice to a typical general practitioner (below).
