With the holiday’s over and winter still very much with us, we thought we’d take some time to refresh our healthy school lunch packing skills. Think of it this way: if you are tired of packing the same old lunches, your kids are probably tired of eating the same old lunches.
Think Outside the Lunch Box
We found some really fun lunch packing ideas on weelicious.com – basically, let’s think about finger foods and bite size pieces that are fresh and healthy… something your children will actually eat. Whole grains, veggies, hard boiled eggs, cheese, fruit, yogurt. Hummus, high in protein, makes a great dip for carrots and apples which are high in fiber. It’s a win/win!
That’s a Wrap
You could also ditch the sandwich all together and replace it with a whole wheat tortilla wrap… cheese and lunch meat or PB&J. There aren’t any wrong answers here. Although, if you have picky eaters at home, they may not agree.
Isn’t it liberating to let yourself forget the old rules – even if we are only talking about healthy school lunches?
Here’s to a smarter and healthier 2015!
