Peanuts and Popcorn and… Mouthguards?

You’ve looked at the calendar for weeks, knowing the day is getting closer. Your kids have reminded you about it for months as they salivate with excitement. The weather is getting warmer and warmer each day and that only means one thing: it’s sports season!

Time to break out all the soccer, football, baseball, basketball, and any other sports gear you can think of. As much as you love seeing your kids staying active and healthy, you also want to keep them safe and protected.

Football players are required to wear mouthguards, but other sports don’t necessarily require them, but should!

As parents, you want the best for your child. You love their infectious personalities and dazzling smiles, so why not protect those teeth?

Mouthguards Are Important, Because…

According to the American Dental Association, 1/3 of all dental injuries are sports related. Using a mouthguard can prevent more than 200,000 oral injuries each year.

When making an investment in your kid’s teeth, make sure it’s an actual investment. What I mean by that is, don’t skimp on a cheap rubber mouthguard that your kid will most likely chew through anyway.

A custom mouthguard from your kid’s dentist is really the best option. They are made from an exact model of your kid’s teeth. It’s the perfect “coat” to protect their pearly whites.

Sports are rough and that means your little sports stars are more prone to chipping, cracking, and even losing their teeth.

If a chipped tooth goes untreated for too long, decay and erosion can set in where root canal treatment may be needed or, at the worst, a tooth extraction.

Mouthguard Care at Home

Most parents (and kids) are surprised at how relatively easy it is to preserve a mouthguard to the fullest! Simple, yet important, daily cleaning and sanitizing will protect it from germs, mold, and infection.

But, just as a reminder, mouthguards do have a lifespan. When you start to see sharp or jagged edges, you need to replace them. A visit to your kids dentist will do the trick and have your child back on the playing field in no time!

Have fun this sports season and make your kid’s dentist (and your pocketbook) happy by protecting their teeth with a mouthguard.

Your kids start out with a happy, healthy mouth so it’s important we help them to keep it that way. You will save yourself thousands of dollars just by making a small investment in a sports mouthguard.
